If you're pricing an Eaton job, you'll get two very different quotes. That's not because one distributor is playing games. It's because there are two ways to buy Eaton gear: part by part, or as one coordinated system.

Dimension 1: Unit cost vs. total cost

It's tempting to think you can compare unit prices and be done with it. That's how I got burned early in my procurement career. I said 'standard' and the vendor heard 'whatever comes in the stock box.' Result: a delivery of components that didn't match the panel layout. We had to reorder two breakers and an auxiliary contact.

Take the question I get a lot: how much does it cost to replace a light switch? A homeowner-level answer is $15 for the switch and $50 for labor. In a commercial system lighting retrofit, the same switch can cost $120 to $400. Why? Because replacement isn't just stripping two wires. It includes verifying the circuit phase, matching the switch type to the load, testing the control network, and sometimes coordinating with a lighting contactor. The switch is still $15. The work around it costs more.

The same hidden complexity applies to other components. I once ordered a replacement for an Eaton speed sensor. Choose the system lighting approach when you're adding controls to a space that never had them, changing a panel or adding a subpanel, coordinating emergency lighting, doing a retrofit with multiple load types, or working to a system lighting spec. That's when the coordinated purchase earns its premium.

And if someone asks how much it costs to replace a light switch, the honest answer is: it depends on whether the switch is just a switch or a layer in a lighting system. I've quoted $140 for a simple replacement and $320 for a switch that had to be integrated into an existing system. Both were Eaton switches. The switch wasn't expensive either time. The knowledge gap was.

System lighting is an approach, not a product category. When you're changing the way lights behave, not just swapping a failed part, treat the purchase as a system. That's the total cost answer, and in my experience, it's the cheaper one in the long run.
