Is the Eaton PSG480F24RM power supply worth the premium?

The conventional wisdom is that a power supply is a power supply. I've inspected enough of them to say that's not true. The PSG480F24RM is a 480 W, 24 VDC rack-mount unit. The part number tells you that much. What I care about is how it behaves under load: line regulation, ripple, hold-up time, and whether the terminals match the wire gauge you're going to use. I've seen budget units pass a bench test at 30% load and sag at 85%.

Is Eaton worth the premium? If your load is close to the supply rating, or if you need predictable behavior on a control panel, yes. For a 5 W LED on a workbench, you can probably buy something cheaper and still sleep fine. Worth it? Depends on the job. That's a boring answer, but it's the honest one.

Which Eaton light switch do I actually need?

What most people don't realize is that 'Eaton light switch' isn't one product. Eaton makes residential-grade and spec-grade lines, and they're not the same internally. A residential-grade toggle is fine for a house. For commercial spaces, I'd rather use a spec-grade switch because it has stronger springs, better terminal retention, and a longer mechanical life.

Also, don't trust the product photo alone. We once ordered 800 occupancy switches with the wrong neutral configuration because the photo looked different from the actual unit. That was a $4,000 mistake, and it created a new rule: verify the wiring diagram before you issue the PO.

Why does my flood light go on and off?

Start with the simplest cause: heat. If the flood light is enclosed and the bulb wattage is higher than the fixture rating, the thermal cutoff will shut it off, wait for it to cool, and turn it back on. That cycling is the number one cause in my inspection logs.

Other causes: a failing photocell or motion sensor, a loose neutral in the junction box, or a failing capacitor in an LED driver. Check the fixture's maximum wattage before you change anything. It takes five minutes. The fix, if you don't, takes a ladder, a replacement visit, and an annoyed customer. Five minutes of verification beats five days of correction.

What should I check before ordering an entrance chandelier?

An entrance chandelier is the first thing people see when they walk in. The last thing they should see is a fixture sitting on the floor because the ceiling box can't support it. Before you order, check three numbers: the fixture weight, the junction box rating, and the overall height from the bottom of the fixture to the floor. For a two-story entry, I like at least 7 feet of clearance.

The question nobody asks is about dimming. If it's an LED entrance chandelier, the driver and the dimmer need to be compatible. Otherwise you get flicker, and then someone blames the fixture instead of the dimmer. (Note to self: do a separate post on this.)

Can I use a regular LED spotlight for a movie-style lighting setup?

If you're searching 'spotlight movie' because you want that dramatic one-light interview look, the answer is yes, with caveats. The specs that matter aren't brightness and throw distance. It's color rendering and flicker. For video, look for CRI 90 or higher, preferably 95+, and test the light at a few shutter speeds.

I've caught flicker with a phone in slow-motion mode. It's not lab-grade testing, but it catches the worst offenders. For movie-style work, a spotlight without barn doors is half as useful. That's the practical reality.

Does surge protection matter if I'm just replacing switches?

Yes, because everything runs downstream of the service panel. The question isn't whether a single light switch needs surge protection; it's whether the panel has a listed SPD. I look for UL 1449 Listed, Type 1 or Type 2, with a reasonable let-through voltage rating.

I didn't fully understand surge protection until a lightning event in 2023 took out a controller board, three lighting dimmers, and a motor drive in one building. The repair cost more than the surge protector would have cost ten times over. Eaton makes whole-house surge protectors, and I include them in retrofit specs even when the customer didn't ask. That's prevention over cure.

Why is there no 'standard' answer for lighting retrofits?

Because a retrofit package is only as good as the building it goes into. The same LED retrofit package that works in a dry warehouse with 40-foot ceilings can fail in a damp parking garage with old wiring and tight plenums. I can only speak to what we test in our own conditions. If your building is different, your results will be different.
