When a Halloween Chandelier Revealed Our Whole-House Surge Protection Gap — and How Eaton Fixed It

It Started with a Halloween Chandelier

It was mid-September 2024, and our operations manager walked into my office holding a picture on her phone. "This," she said, "is going in the lobby. Before Halloween."

The photo showed a massive wrought-iron chandelier shaped like an old tree branch, hung with tiny orange LED pumpkin lanterns. It was striking. It was also not something plugged into a standard wall outlet.

The Surge Protection Gap No One Talks About

People think surge protection is just a power strip with a red reset button. The reality is different.

But — and this is the honest part — if your facility is a small retail space with only plugged-in fixtures and no hardwired lighting contactors, a whole-house SPD is probably overkill. A good quality point-of-use surge protector at the panel would suffice. The whole-house solution makes sense for multi-zone commercial, not for a single-room office.

The question isn't whether you need surge protection. It's how much your specific setup requires.

What I Learned

Three things I'll carry forward from this project:

  1. Surge protection is infrastructure, not an accessory. Don't wait for a specialty fixture to reveal the gap.
  2. Local doesn't mean faster. Check stock before assuming delivery speed. That cost me time and budget.
  3. Invoice compliance is non-negotiable. A great product from a vendor who can't invoice correctly might as not exist — your finance team will agree.

The chandelier went up on October 28th. It looked fantastic. But what I'll remember most from the project isn't the pumpkin lanterns — it's the SPD panel in the electrical room that quietly protects them every time the elevator motor kicks in.

That's the stuff no one talks about. Until it fails.
